Utah Beach was the westernmost of the five Normandy landing sectors, and the first Americans to reach it arrived by air rather than by sea.
Shortly after 01:00 on 6 June 1944, paratroopers of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions dropped across the flooded fields of the Cotentin Peninsula to seize the causeways behind the dunes. Sainte-Mère-Église is the fixed point of that night. A parachute caught on the church tower above the square, and the commune became one of the first in France to be liberated. The Airborne Museum stands opposite, at 14 rue Eisenhower, which is why so many Utah Beach Guided Tour tours converge on this small Norman town before continuing to the coast some fifteen kilometres east.
Opened in 1964 on land given by the commune, the museum was built as a sequence of separate pavilions rather than a single hall. The first, its roof shaped like an open parachute canopy, shelters a Waco CG-4A assault glider. The second holds a Douglas C-47 Skytrain, the type that carried the sticks over the drop zones. Operation Neptune, added in 2014, walks visitors through a full-scale fuselage and out into a reconstructed Norman village staged under a night sky. That terrain is the larger exhibit. The bocage hedgerows still divide the fields; the La Fière causeway sits four kilometres west; the marshland the German garrison deliberately flooded still shows in the low ground.
